Mesothelium is the layer of tissue (membrane) that surrounds certain organs of the body.
This tissue is divided into 3 primary regions:
- The pleura - the lining around the lungs
- The pericardium - the lining around the heart, and
- The peritoneum - the lining around the abdominal cavity
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that begins in the mesothelium.Mesothelioma most common in people who have been exposed to asbestos, and continues to increase in incidence worldwide.
